So where do we live. We are northeast of town and are on the power grid. The house has electric baseboard heat so we could never be off grid. Unless we replaced the whole heating system.
We have a couple of pasture pets (horses) that help keep the grass down. And we irrigate about 6 acres so that we can have a little more grass. But we still have to buy hay for the winter months. The irrigation has been fun as we have water rights on a ditch that we use for flood irrigation. And I have had to rebuild a wooden weir that had fallen into disrepair. That was fun as I studied some of the methods and the calculations for how to “gate” the water flow to be within my rights.
Besides the two horses, we get a number of other critters on the property. We have deer (usually a couple of dozen), a pheasant or two, some turkeys and other birds. Even the occasional bald eagle. And sometimes some of the neighboring ranchers cows.
